Alumni Network Toolkit: Film Screening (Women in Film)

This toolkit pays tribute to women that have contributed to making the film industry a more gender-equal place. Gender equality is not only a human right, it is also the United Nations’ fifth goal of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. When it comes to gender equality in film, there is still plenty of room for improvement. Hence, the Swedish Film Institute together with the Swedish Minister of Culture announced their 50/50 by 2020 initiative at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016. The concept is now widely used by the international film industry.

About

Included in this toolkit you find a suggestion on how to shape a film event on the topic of gender equality. We provide access to  Swedish films suitable on this topic via the Sweden film box, that can be accessed through embassies.

The Sweden film box is a collection of Swedish film, selected by the Swedish Institute and the Swedish Film Institute. The films are to be used in non-profit cultural settings. Within the filmbox there is a selection of films that features strong female characters and for this toolkit you can choose between those films – A Holy Mess, A Separation, A Serious Game, Aniara, Astrid, Becoming Astrid, Beleville Baby, Beyond Dreams, Britt-Marie Was Here, Girl in Tales, King of Atlantis, Loving Couples, Lucky One, Martha and Nicki, Reflections, The Girl the Mother and the Demons, the Mozart Brothers, the Reunion, Young Sophie Bell.

Step by step manual

  1. Choose a film in the film database: https://filmdatabasen.si.se/fmi/webd#fakta. You find the films suitable for this toolkit by clicking on “Browse titles suitable for the theme “Pioneering women in film”.
  2. Reach out to the embassy in your country and ask for the person responsible for the Sweden film box. Every embassy has one appointed person for the Swedish films. If you do not know anyone at the embassy where you live, email SI at alumni@si.se to get this person’s name and email address. Ask this person if you can borrow the film you want to show, referring to the Alumni Network Toolkit. The embassy staff is completely responsible for the films, so you need to report back certain things such as number of participants.
  3. Make sure you read, understand and comply to our regulations that come with the license for the film. They are to be found in the toolkit above.
  4. Find a suitable venue with all necessary equipment such as projector/screen and a player that is compatible for Blue Ray (we suggest you try the player in advance, the Blue Ray CDs look like normal DVDs but they are completely different and don’t work with normal DVD players).
  5. Find a speaker that is suitable for your event – it can be an expert in gender equality or an expert in film or someone else that is related to the content of the film you have chosen. This is optional but it is always good to have another component to your event than just the film
  6. Set a date and time, be sure you can send in the application for funding at least five weeks before the event takes place.
  7. Create a page for your event so that people can register. We suggest you use confetti.events or a similar service but it can be a facebook event or google forms or any other service that you find suitable.
  8. Post your event in the Sweden Alumni Activity Calendar.
  9. Send invitations to your members. If you need help with reaching out to new members, get in touch with SI who can help sending an email to their contacts.
  10. Request the printable file for the leaflet or wall banner from the Swedish Institute to print and either hang in your venue or hand out to your guests. Borrow the film from the embassy. The embassy staff is completely responsible for the films, so you need to report back certain things such as number of participants. Ask the embassy how they would like you to do that.
  11. Have your event!
  12. Send in the report to SI, not more than two weeks after the event.
