Gender equality remains a major challenge in rural poor and urban informal settlements. Many learners face great challenges in pursuing their education. Almost half of the women and young girls report experience of gender-based violence. This affect girls’ school attendance, performance and completion.
This project will carry out preparatory research which will form the basis for introducing gender hubs in secondary public schools in Nyalenda slums of Kisumu City, Kenya. Gender hubs will be safe spaces where girls can turn for gender advocacy and advice, but they will also work to challenge gender norms, informing about gender equity, legal protection and gender transformative practices. Hubs will be staffed by trained university student mentors providing non-formal education and support.
