So far, over a thousand participants from 25 alumni networks have organized and participated in 35 activities on the theme of inclusive societies. The program includes everything from seminars focused on children’s rights and gender equality to participation in pride parades, crisis support for alumni in Ukraine and covid info videos shown on national TV in Zambia.
SI is increasing its focus on work with inclusive societies in October and already on September 29, a Sweden Talks event was held on the theme of racism with diversity expert Barakat Ghebrehawariat.
– The question ”Is it ok to say black?” is rooted in some kind of anxiety around skin colour, that we don’t really talk about in Sweden. We have been socialized to see the world from a so-called colourblind perspective. But I argue that we actually need to see colour. And the better language we have to speak about it, the easier it is for us to be part of a fruitful dialogue, Barakat says in his engaging talk.
In addition to Sweden Talks, the alumni can participate in a workshop on norm criticism by the gender photographer Tomas Gunnarsson on October 13, and the toolkit “Images that change the world” will become available to the alumni network and Swedish embassies.
