The project stresses that ship emissions have an impact on both our health and our environment. Therefore, it is crucial to assess the present and future compliance costs, as well as the health and environmental effects. The EU-project EnviSuM addresses measurements and modelling strategies to assess present and future cost as well as the health and environmental effects of ship emissions in view of emission regulations that entered into force in January 2015. One important part of this project is to study the impact of ship emissions on the air quality and health of the people in the Baltic sea region.
The EnviSuM project carries out studies focusing on Gothenburg and Gdansk/Gdynia. The E-EnviSuM project includes studies focusing on the St. Petersburg area which is one of the most important port cities in the Baltic Sea region. The studies of E-EnviSuM comprises emission measurements of ships in the St. Petersburg area as well as air quality modelling.
Moreover, as policy makers and authorities lack information to develop future environmental regulations, the project facilitates cross-sectorial and cross border discussions that also include NGOs and the private sector. The projects results will provide policy makers and authorities with tools and recommendations for the development of future environmental regulations, and the shipping sector with guidance to support future investment decisions.
