The BalticRadar project is about sustainable urban development in the Baltic Sea region. The project wants to enable mutual learning from innovation projects and will contribute to the development of new methods and tools for strategic design of urban systems.
New technologies and innovations provide new opportunities for sustainable urban systems for transportation, energy, waste, water, etc. Yet, it is necessary to consider the risks, challenges and vulnerabilities that such systems might bring. Hence, it is important to enable critical evaluation of technologies, policies and plans. This project will provide a forum for such discussions. A basis for the project is the so-called “Innovation Radar” which has been piloted within the Swedish Strategic Innovation Program “Viable Cities”. The Innovation Radar is an interactive tool for co-developing, visualising and sharing ideas, which, through this project, will be applied in the context of the Baltic Sea region.
A series of activities will take place in Estonia, Sweden and Ukraine. They include co-creation sessions, a study visit to Sweden, round-table talks and a student competition. One of the aims is to discuss the future directions for research and innovation in the field of sustainable urban development, climate change, climate mitigation and sustainable urban energy systems. The project will also identify priorities for joint research and innovation that will enable carbon neutral cities in the Baltic Sea region.
