AICE: AI as an enabler for a circular economy in the food and packaging value chain

The aim of the project is to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) can support the transition to a circular economy within the food and packaging value chain.

Today’s systems—laws, policies, supply chains, waste management, packaging design, food safety standards, and business models—are largely built for a linear economy, making circular transformation particularly challenging for small and medium-sized enterprises. To enable this shift, large volumes of data must be collected and analysed.

The project will investigate the key challenges faced by companies in the value chain and assess how AI tools and applications can be used to sort and interpret data to support circular solutions. Activities include desk research, interviews with companies, and the identification and prioritisation of the most pressing challenges. The findings will lay the foundation for future cooperation and the development of a larger joint initiative.
