‘Every moment is an opportunity to learn and lead’

Chinonso Ihuoma is making the most of his time in Sweden – not least by embracing the opportunities offered through the SI Network for Global Professionals (NFGP). Alongside his academic journey, he’s taken part in leadership programmes and volunteered at an SI leadership event – an experience that broadened his network and connected him with change-makers from around the world. Now preparing to enter his second and final year as an SI scholar, Chinonso shares his reflections on what he’s learned so far – and how other scholars can make the most of their time in Sweden.

Volunteering at Impact Pioneers’24

In 2024, the Swedish Institute offered SI scholarship holders the opportunity to volunteer for Impact Pioneers Sweden Week – a leadership programme that brings together leaders across ecosystems for entrepreneurship and innovation. Chinonso Ihuoma didn’t hesitate to get involved. For him, volunteering was a way to grow as a leader.

‘Helping people and contributing to meaningful causes has always been a core motivation for me. That’s why I volunteered for Impact Pioneers. I wanted to support the event in any way I could, while also learning more about the Swedish business environment.

Volunteering gave me the chance to observe leadership in action and to understand how sustainability and innovation are approached in Sweden. It also allowed me to connect with inspiring individuals from around the world. It was a rewarding experience that let me give back while gaining valuable insights and relationships.’

Chinonso describes his role during the programme as both practical and people-focused.

‘As a volunteer, I assisted participants in settling in smoothly by guiding them through the registration process and helping them become comfortable with the event environment. I also supported the organising team by arranging and distributing materials needed for various sessions, ensuring everything ran efficiently and on time.’

Growing through self-leadership

Last year, Chinonso also took part in the NFGP Self-Leadership Programme and reflects on how others can make the most of the programme and network.

The Self-Leadership Programme was a truly transformative experience. My biggest tip is to be open and fully present. Don’t just attend the sessions – engage with them. Ask questions, share your thoughts, and connect with fellow participants. There’s so much to learn from one another. Also, take time to reflect on your growth during the programme. Self-leadership starts from within.

Finally, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Whether it’s speaking up in group discussions or volunteering for extra tasks, every moment is an opportunity to learn and lead.’

One year in – one to go

Now approaching his second and final year, Chinonso reflects on the journey so far and what he’s looking forward to.

‘It’s been an amazing experience! I’ve made new friends, built networks, and immersed myself in student life.

Joining an entrepreneurship community in Sweden has led to exciting collaborations. One highlight was travelling to Italy for a Blended Intensive Programme on COP. I’m now looking forward to another in Lithuania, focused on business creation.

As I enter my second year, I’m eager to deepen my knowledge, engage in hands-on projects, and participate in more international programmes related to sustainable development and entrepreneurship. I also look forward to applying what I’ve learned in my business and community.’

SI leadership programmes

Each year, several hundred changemakers and global leaders take part in SI leadership programmes that strengthen their ability to drive sustainable development and lead change in their home countries and regions.

As part of each programme, participants gather in Sweden for a week of onsite learning – including interactive workshops, field visits, and networking with representatives from Swedish companies and organisations.

Through the SI Network for Global Professionals, scholars can apply to volunteer during the week in Sweden.
