The SI Scholarship for Global Professional has the aim of empowering future global leaders whose ambition is to work toward a democratic, just and sustainable society in their home countries and regions. The scholarship is awarded based on academic merits, work and leadership experience, as well as one’s prerequisites of contributing to sustainable development. The total budget for this year’s scholarship holders comprises approximately SEK 163 million.
This year, SI received over 20 percent more applications for the scholarship. 9843 applications were received and out of those 7172 passed SI:s first screening process and were admitted to Swedish universities on 30 March, which are some of the requirements to be considered for the scholarship.
The final scholarship holders will be studying at 29 different higher education institutions in Sweden and are enrolled in 192 different study programmes. Among the most popular study fields are: social science, technology, and science.
Madeleine Sjöstedt, Director General of the Swedish Institute emphasises on the importance of the scholarship and the relations with SI scholarship awardees:
– Since 1945 we have worked to strengthen relations between Sweden and the world and our scholarship programme is an important tool in that. Studying in Sweden gives these talents more tools and increased knowledge to work with sustainable development and the 2030 Agenda in their home countries. This year we’ve seen a record high interest in our scholarship from great talent all over the world, and we look forward to build a fruitful relationship with the new scholarship awardees. Welcome to Sweden.
