The exhibition has been shown in over 30 countries and has attracted more than 400,000 visitors since the initiative started in 2009. The exhibition is constantly growing as new countries participate. Program activities are arranged in conjunction with the exhibition.
For the first time, East African images from leading cartoonists in Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia accompany the Swedish cartoonists. The exhibition, curated by Mr. Victor Ndula from Kenya together with Swedish cartoonist Magnus Bard, is touring by the Swedish Foreign Missions and local partners. Locally curated exhibitions are shown also in Uganda and Zimbabwe.
Water scarcity, deforestation and short-term environmental policy are topics that involve a number of cartoonists in East Africa says Magnus Bard, co-curator of the East African version shown along with 15 climate images from Swedish cartoonist Helena Lindholm, Karin Sunvisson, Love Antell, Riber Hansson and Magnus Bard.
– It is crucial that local climate problems are highlighted at each exhibition location. That is best done by artists who themselves live in that reality and know what they are talking about’ says Magnus Bard, co-curator of the East African part of the exhibition.
– Climate concerns engage people around the world. The Facing the Climate initiative offers Swedish Foreign Missions and partners a chance to collaboration and co-creation, and only then can we change and make an impact on the environment’ says Project Manager Birgitta Tennander at the Swedish Institute.
