Sweden Talks: Light pollution – a hidden sustainability crisis

When did you last see the stars? Most of us turn on the lights without a second thought. Artificial light has transformed our lives, but at a cost. Today, more than 80 percent of the world’s population lives under a light-polluted night sky. Excessive artificial light disrupts ecosystems, harms pollinators, and affects our sleep and overall well-being. How can we tackle this global challenge?

Sweden Talks invites you to a critical and forward-looking conversation on light pollution.

Meet Kim Höglund, Lighting Designer and Sustainability Expert, who will share how light pollution and climate change are connected, and why access to darkness and balanced lighting is essential not only for biodiversity and human well-being, but also fundamental to sustainable urban development, leading to safe and resilient cities

Kim works in partnership with landscape architects, ecologists, and biologists to ensure that lighting designs benefit both people and the environment, reducing pollution, conserving energy, and promoting sustainable, livable communities.

In this Sweden Talks, we will explore how smarter lighting is key to building healthier and more resilient communities.

During the seminar, you will gain insight into why sustainable lighting design is essential for future cities, as well as several key aspects of light pollution:

  • Biodiversity loss: Artificial light disrupts nocturnal ecosystems, reducing pollination and threatening vulnerable species.
  • Climate impact: Lighting accounts for up to 30 percent of urban electricity use. The use of smarter systems cuts emissions and costs.
  • Human health: Overexposure to artificial light disturbs circadian rhythms, contributing to sleep disorders, diseases and reduced well-being.

Kim Höglund is a Lighting Designer and Sustainability Expert with over 15 years of experience in ecological lighting, specialising in light pollution, biodiversity, life-cycle analysis and sustainable urban development. She leads Sitowise Sweden’s work on sustainable lighting and trains future professionals in environmental strategies, advancing ecological lighting design in Sweden.
