BCEC; Baltic Composting Excellence Center

The BCEC project is about biological technologies and innovations for treatment of organic waste. It will focus on the establishment of a Centre of Excellence in the Baltic Sea region.

BCEC notes that in the region, there is a common consensus in using biological technologies for composting organic waste. However, composting is a process that generates emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane. Although parts of these emissions are inherent to the process, parts of them can be abated by low-cost biological technologies. Against this background, BCEC argues it is important to review the emissions and the abatements. Particularly the emission factors for different composting technologies, in order to review the best available practices to minimise emissions of greenhouse gases.

BCEC plans to establish a Baltic Composting Excellence Centre where the Baltic Sea region becomes a world leader in composting innovations. The project will draw on the experiences of working together in several other projects since 2010. The activities include creation of an invitational leaflet to recruit new partners for a future project and workshops in each country to pinpoint the direction of the Excellence Centre.
