BEST marine: Baltic Sea ecosystem services applications – Transboundary support to the sustainable use of marine resources

The aim of the project is to advance the coherent implementation of ecosystem service applications in policy and decision making across local, national and regional authorities of the Baltic Sea.

Coastal planning authorities in Baltic Sea countries often do not have accurate information about coastal and marine ecosystem services and their potential values, which affects biodiversity, conservation and spatial planning at both local and regional scales. Ecosystem services are free services that natural ecosystems provide to humans. In aquatic environments they include for example, nursery habitats for species, flood protection, improving air and water quality and regulating carbon flows.

Project activities include to establish a network of competence between Baltic countries that can work together to develop applications for ecosystem service information and the production of a road map to align ecosystem services, outputs, method and data between Baltic countries.
