ESSENCE: Emerging mosquito surveillance network

The aim of the project is to build an expert network for mosquito surveillance in the Baltic Sea region.

Due to climate change, both invasive and native mosquito species – as well as mosquito-borne diseases – are spreading northwards in Europe. To strengthen preparedness and enable early warning of new species or emerging diseases, effective mosquito surveillance is essential. However, the number of skilled experts in the Baltic Sea region is limited, while the land area requiring monitoring is vast.

This project addresses a shared challenge by building a network of professionals from government authorities and universities across the region. By exchanging knowledge and experiences – including both successful and less effective strategies – participants will enhance their capacity and efficiency. The network will serve as a support system and resource for its members and increase opportunities for cooperation Core activities of the project include both in-person and online meetings to foster relationships and facilitate knowledge exchange.
