The human rights of marginalised people have long been ignored in Zimbabwe. An
example is the indigenous Ndau people, who lost their livelihoods through cyclone
Idai due to the government’s failure to protect their rights in the face of climate-related disasters.
Manicaland State University of Applied Sciences has developed a unique
partnership with the Ndau communities. However, staff and
students lack the skills to support rights-based resilience capabilities as well as critical
thinking for problems such as the violation of human rights. Through workshops, this capacity building project educates staff and students to employ critical thinking and build democratic capacities, within the university and with the Ndau communities.
