NordBaltMAP; Networking and knowledge exchange in seed production of medicinal- and aromatic plants

The NordBaltMAP project focuses on seed production of medicinal and aromatic plants. It aims to increase the knowledge in this area, and to create a network for a future large-scale seed production of these crops in the Baltic Sea region.

Medicinal and aromatic plants have been of interest to mankind for centuries. Still, the knowledge and experience in seed production of medicinal and aromatic plants is nowadays limited and many institutions face problems with multiplication. This is problematic because the seeds that are already stored in gene banks are aging and must be multiplied on a regular basis. Several species in the Baltic Sea region are also threatened by climate change and over-exploitation.

The project stresses the need for coordinated information and organized exchange of knowledge. The aim is to collect relevant experience in seed production of medicinal and aromatic plants, and to create a network for this purpose in the region. The idea is to develop and implement effective strategies for multiplication and germination of medicinal plants. A main activity will be to sow seeds and take care of the plants until harvesting time.
