In the past years, the rap scene has been growing in the Arab world. Despite being mostly dominated by male rappers, there is a lot of potential for women and there are many rising female rappers. Rap and HipHop enable women to speak boldly about taboo topics such as gender inequality, sexism, solidarity and day-to-day struggles.
Our goal is to fill in the gender gap in this music genre. We want to challenge the reputation of rap/hiphop as a male-dominated industry. We intend to organise a creative residency with up to 10 women and non-binary rappers from the MENA region in Lebanon to compose songs individually and collectively. The residency will conclude with a public show in Beirut and Tripoli by our artists, and possibly inviting a couple of well-known rappers from Lebanon.
