SusPlant; Plant-based diet to ensure progress towards sustainable production and consumption

The SusPlant project is about sustainable food production and consumption in the Baltic Sea region and the EU’s Eastern Partnership countries. It will focus on knowledge and attitudes to sustainable food.

SusPlant notes that healthy diet is increasingly recognised as an important part of global health, and sustainability in the food chain as a crucial factor in consumers’ choices. In line with this trend, the market for vegetarian alternatives has grown dramatically. Nevertheless, meat and dairy products remain a significant share of most consumers’ diet in the Baltic Sea region. The SusPlant project argues that reducing meat consumption will be good for the environment and for human health. Still, little is known about the attitudes to meat consumption, and sustainable food production and consumption in the Baltic Sea region.

The project wants to establish a collaboration on sustainable food production and consumption. It plans to examine current knowledge on healthy diet in the partner countries. It will also study the attitudes to meat, and the readiness to reduce meat consumption. The activities include to connect partners, presentations and discussions on existing food strategies, interviews and discussions with consumers and food industry, and presentation of current plant-based food projects.
