SUSWOOD: Sustainable approach to wooden buildings – innovation based on traditional knowledge

The project brings together heritage experts from three countries to develop a comprehensive approach to sustainable treatments and maintenance of both modern and traditional wooden architecture.

A key challenge is the survival of historic buildings in the face of industrialised and globalised construction methods, the disruption of traditional knowledge transmission, and prevailing attitudes that treat heritage primarily as a tourist asset. These factors often hinder climate-friendly approaches to energy efficiency and maintenance.

The project supports the repair and renovation of existing buildings to extend their lifespan and reduce the need for replacement. It also explores low-cost, sustainable methods for new constructions to replace environmentally harmful practices. Activities include workshops, seminars, and field visits, with each country contributing its unique expertise.
