Ukrainian-Swedish-Georgian Online Dictionary Project – SUGODP

The SUGODP project is about the creation of online dictionaries for direct translation between the languages of the partner countries. It will initially focus on Ukrainian and Swedish.

SUGODP stresses that the basis for academic internationalisation is communication between human beings. A growing number of students in Ukraine, Sweden and Georgia are already studying each other’s languages. The contacts between the countries are likely to increase even more in the near future, SUGODP states. Still, no modern dictionaries exist between the partner countries’ languages.

The purpose of the project is to create open-access online dictionaries. It argues that these will facilitate academic between speakers of Ukrainian, Swedish and Georgian. The dictionaries will also be useful for a broad audience including NGOs, official agencies and the general public. SUGODP stresses that the dictionary database must be accessible, and that it is easy to work with and expand. The first step will be to create Ukrainian-Swedish and Swedish-Ukrainian dictionaries of approximately 50,000 words. The next step is to plan the dictionaries between Ukrainian, Swedish and Georgian. The Swedish-Ukrainian dictionary will serve as a pilot and a stepping stone for the following phases.
