The EnvTI BSR project addresses anti-corruption and environmental crimes in the Baltic Sea region.
Emission of hazardous substances to waters is a serious challenge across the Baltic Sea region. Both the EU and national governments in the region are funding various ecological solutions to reduce the emissions. Nevertheless, the contamination continues. EvnTI BSR suggests that one reason behind the problems is corruption and that there is a broad recognition of the need for transnational joint actions. The project means that the regional strategies do not cover on-the-ground work by civil society. It argues that regional joint actions should include monitoring of industrial plants by both public and civil society actors. Moreover, EnvTI BSR believes transnational pressure is more effective than work by single organizations. Therefore, it wants to strengthen the civic protection against contamination of the Baltic Sea.
The goal is to establish a consortium for international exchange of information and best practices. The consortium will involve at least 20 actors from civil society, independent media, and research institutions. The activities include three workshops, and exchange of knowledge through previous cases of environmental crimes and cases. The project will also set up a reference group which will be available for consultation on real cases.
